Before I start working on this, I pose this question: does anyone know
of a reason why this wouldn't work, or wouldn't be desirable?
Allocation and deallocation are pretty cheap. It's not obvious to me
whether this would actually gain anything. It might, but tended
descriptors incur some cost, too.
